Laval

Laval

Rebellious & Unique

Nowadays visitars will find a peaceful city resting along both sides of the Mayenne, and yet Laval draws its impulsive personality from the river, once a tortuous watercourse hurtling down the foothills of the Armorican massif.

The city emerged in the Middle Ages from an act of rebellion perpetrated by a lord on a quest for independence. It has always delighted in defying any form of authority, starting with the Plantagenets and later the English and the Jacobin revalutionaries.

Rebellious by nature, Laval also readily cultivates its unique identity. Extraordinary characters like surgeon Ambroise Paré, writer Alfred Jarry, painter Henri Rousseau and sailor Alain Gerboult were raised within its walls, their incredible heritage still haunting the historic quarter's cobbled streets, the grand arteries of the Napoleonic era and the contemporary neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the city.

The reward of a bountiful encounter between photographer Chanel Koehl and writer Stéphane Hiland, whose alliance of appreciation has inspired this original portrait of Laval, offers an invitation to marvel at the exceptional architectural heritage, forged over the course of a thousand years of history...
