Endeavours and masterpieces

Since sport constitutes an essential part of the events, practices, experiences, objects, and representations of contemporary societies, it cannot escape the attention of art and artists. Nevertheless, the bonds that art weaves with this « total social phenomenon », far from confining themselves to mere illustration, invite multiple lines of questioning (between admiration, humour, and critique) both regarding the reality of sport and the expectations of art. In the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, these questions inspire the message of the exhibition Endeavours and Masterpieces and its catalogue.
