Esmael Bahrani has developed a powerful and distinctive style of painting, drawing on his personal history and memory of his native country. Against backgrounds of sand and pigment, beneath swathes of deep black, figures emerge, rescued from oblivion by scraping and erosion.

Born in Iran in 1978, marked by the scars of the Iran-Iraq War and the shadow of the Revolutionary Guards, he trained in fine art and, in secret, began painting in his studio and on the streets of Tehran, creating imposing silhouettes in revolt.

Having arrived in France in 2015, the artist makes each work an act of remembrance as well as an exploration of the intimate. He carries the memory of Isfahan - its hues of chalk, raw brick and golden sand - and summons universal figures : exile, Mahsa Amini, or Eurydice, returned from the underworld only to vanish before our very eyes.

This monographic catalogue traces the trajectory of a body of work that is uncompromising, essential and urgent.
